Toiminnanjohtajan esittelyterveiset

Toivottavasti kaikki kuitenkin jakavat tietoa aktiivisesti eri kanavissa (mm. Finnish Open Data Ecosystem Facebook-ryhmä ja monet muut)

Toivottavasti näen mahdollisimman monia teitä toimistollamme (tervetuloa jos et vielä ole käynyt Caloniuksenkatu 9 D 64:ssä), lounaalla, avoimen tiedon tapahtumissa, sosiaalisessa mediassa – jne.  Sauna on lämmin perjantaisin klo 17-19 – jos naisia tulee (tervetuloa), niin vuoro on helppo splitata kahteen. Itse yritän puolestaan pyhittää perjantai-iltapäivät klo 15-17 ideoiden kehittelyyn ja jutusteluun okffilaisten kanssa, joten silloin varsinkin on hyvä piipahtaa täällä.

Se minusta, palataan asiapitoisempiin sisältöihin pian.

Hey Open Knowledge Finland members and friends,

I’ve had the pleasure and honor to receive the job of the toiminnanjohtaja (executive director) of Open Knowledge Finland ry. I actually started my job already in March, and I am therefore by now pretty well acquainted and involved in many of our activities. Awesome stuff going on, really across the spectrum!

I’m happy to know many of you from past engagements – for those who I don’t, I’m sure we’ll meet soon.  As far as by background, I’ve been working in the ICT sector for over 15 years in various team/project/development leadership roles, in startups, IT corporations, Finnish Ministry of Justice and most recently leading a small ICT non-profit in Liberia. Thus, I’d like to think I have understanding of our world from multiple perspectives.  I’ve been involved in the open knowledge and open data scene more or less since 2009 – from that time I know many of the open data activists and a large part of OKFFI founding members.

At OKFFI I’m fascinated by many things – everyday. One of the most important things to me, and one of the key reasons I chose this job and mission, is our diversity. I’ve always enjoyed working in organizations with very different ways of thinking – and thus strengths.  I want to encourage this at OKFFI.

My work effort is actually split between “real project work”, as well as the more general management and development of OKFFI as an organization.

The “Project manager self” in me is responsible for the Open Challenge Finland, the new “Open *” innovation challenge. The Open FInland Challenge renews and refines the fine legacy of the Apps4Finland competition. Driving the Open Finland Challenge program is likely to take as much as about 60% of my time. As part of this is planned for the Open Knowledge Roadshow as before, around many key Finnish cities.

As the “executive director” (40%), I am trying to ensure that we succeed in our goals as a collective, network, and an organization. This involves e.g. ensuring that OKF (and its themes) become known, we establish networks effectively and naturally amongst each other and with various stakeholders and generally strengthen our force (number of members, more communication, more active members, etc.) – in general increase our impact. While our goal is to maintain a low-bureacracy organization and decentralized mode of work, we might need to develop some of the perhaps less exciting “administrative issues” too.

Sure, we have a large group of people, scattered geographically and “thematically”, so of course no-one knows everything that is happening or has happened, That too, of course, is the nature of networks. But, I do hope you all still actively share information across the many channels we’re using (eg. the Finnish Open Data Ecosystem Facebook group and many others)

I do hope to see as many of you at our office (welcome if you have not yet visited Caloniuksenkatu 9 D 64 in), at open data events & various social gatherings – etc. We have a sauna slot at the office for a nice 5-7 PM on Fridays – if women should show up (welcome!), it is easy to split into two slots. Great way to close the working week.

Personally I will try to dedicate Fridays 3-5 PM  to developing ideas and a chatting with OKFFI members, so especially then is also a good time to pop in here at the office.

Enough about me, will be back w/ more fact-filled content soon. 🙂
